Feira do Relogio

Trucks, sellers and people buying
Feira do Relogio is a very nice free market which takes place in Lisbon each Sunday from 7:00 till 14:00. As for all the free markets in Portugal, the opening and closing hours are not to be read in a Swiss way: at 14:00 you see sellers packing their things, which is an excuse to make the last sale. In order to reach it you just need to take the metro, red line, and stop in Chelas.

When you go out from the metro stop you are in Avenida Dr. Augusto de Castro. Just look for the perpendicular street called Rua Conselheiro Emídio Navarro, take it and and keep going straight. At the certain point you will see a field, just go there and you will find yourself at the top of a ravine. Down, there is Feira do Relogio.
Somewhere you can find stairs, so try to go around the ravine in order to avoid running down the hill. Otherwise you can always jump down like a Viking conqueror. Whatever way you choose to arrive there, it is definitely worth seeing it.
If you are used to silent places get ready: it is a habit of Portuguese sellers to scream as much as possible to attract customers.

In this way, walking between men screaming "eppa! eppa!", you will find yourself surrounded by all sort of goods. From fresh vegetables to soap for dished, from cosmetics and toiletries to plant.
You will find carpets, clothes, suitcases, shoes, batteries, pans and pots, cakes, eggs, living snails ready to be cooked, towels, bedding, toys, razors, bags and so on.
When you are tired of looking around, there is an area dedicated to street food. Nothing like McDonald's, thought. Here you can find the typical Portuguese sandwiches: "bifana", a sandwich with sliced po
rk inside, or "entremeado", which is pure pork fat.
Mustard, Ketchup, Mayonese and hot pepper are ready for you on the table.

When you feel it is time to leave - and therefore you want to purchase some food for later, you can find some specific vegetables such as "banana pao", a banana which is supposed to be cooked. You can slice it and fry it or put it with its shell directly into the boiling water.
